Stuck on Hao (Shaman King) costume!

Post by Itako No Kita » Wed Jul 20, 2005 12:14 pm

I'm a newbie. So I apologize in advance if my questions seem a bit stupid. Or.. just plain dumb.

So anyway, I'm trying to make a Hao costume. I've got the pants somewhat prepared, but I'm stuck on the gloves, the shoes, and the poncho/cloak, as well as the earrings.

Below are some images, in case you haven't heard of Hao. :3

I'm totally lost on what material I should use or anything like that, so please, anything helpful is muchly appreciated.
Keep in mind that I am a girl. And that I don't have my ears pierced. ^^;

Thanks in advance! <3

Your user pic is hilarious! Fizzgig tantrum! ^_^

I can help a bit with the earrings. We used a hollow, plastic, red ball like the kind you'd find in a playground that has a ball pit. It's thin and soft so it's easy to cut with an X-acto or scissors. Bought a toy ball and bat set at the dollar store to get the ball. So we cut the 2 disks from the ball and pasted on the star and black background that we printed out on sticker paper. You should experiment a bit with regular paper first because you need to cut out some notches/triangles to make the sticker conform to the domed shape of the disk. To attach the earring to your ear, try the thrift store or dollar store for dangling clip-on earrings that have the "button"-looking part on the clip. Take off whatever's dangling, and attach your new star disks. Voila! Lightweight, non-pierced earrings. If you can't find the right style of earring base in clip-on, you can get a "converter clip" that lets you just bend the post of a pierced earring to change it into clip-on.

Hey there, no worries at all about being a newbie – everyone starts somewhere, and there are no "stupid" questions in cosplay! For your Hao costume, let's break it down. For the gloves, a stretchy fabric like four-way stretch pleather or a heavy knit would work best for that snug fit, or you could use a sturdy non-stretch like twill and add a zipper. Hao's shoes can be tackled by modifying flat black boots or sandals with EVA foam for the distinctive toe, or by creating fabric covers over basic flats. For the crucial poncho/cloak, choose a fabric with good drape but some body, like gabardine, suiting fabric, or a medium-weight broadcloth, and look for a simple poncho pattern to modify for his collar. Since you don't have pierced ears, clip-on earring blanks are your easiest option for the earrings, or you could even use spirit gum for a temporary hold. Remember to use mock-ups for the trickier pieces and keep those reference photos close – you've got this!
